UK Events & Diesel Use Fact Sheet

"How events are contributing to deadly air pollution and what we can do about it."

With data from A Greener Festival, Julie's Bicycle, Powerful Thinking and over 20 million data points of electronic monitoring analysed by ZAP Concepts, the factsheet is a snapshot of the impact of diesel use for power generation at UK events and how it contributes to a very real climate crisis and public health emergency.

This is a problem that can easily be solved, as reduced diesel use is financially better for the
events and venues and significantly better for the environment. The events industry are working
to understand and reduce their diesel dependence and call upon other industries to do the
same.

AIF’s Partnership with BBC Introducing 2012-2015

AIF initially collaborated with BBC Introducing at the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend in 2012. Having rolled out the scheme nationally, the initiative has since seen the likes of Savages, James Bay, My Panda Shall Fly, and The Heartbreaks come through the scheme, all of which played on the main stages of AIF festivals.
The partnership existed to pair emerging artists with independent festivals, as championing new music is a big part of the festival world, and something that all of the promoters within AIF believe in. AIF and BBC Introducing came together to help open doors for the headliners of the future, working together to develop great British talent.

Powerful Thinking’s Fuel Tool

Festivals organisers can now use a free online tool to check their energy performance in less than a minute. Supported by AIF and produced by not for profit industry think-do tank Powerful Thinking, this simple tool asks a series of questions and provides the user with an energy rating based on industry benchmarks.
The tool also provides carbon emissions attributable to fuel use, percentage of Waste Vegetable Oil Biodeisel compared to industry averages, a print-out of your results to share with staff, and links to information about how to reduce fuel use and costs.

Alcohol Entertainment Licensing Update

There are already mandatory conditions on all premises licences for festivals with the aim of ensuring that irresponsible drinks promotions do not take place. The Government has now “tightened these up”. At present, these new conditions will apply from 1 October 2014. There were also previous changes to regulated entertainment deregulating live music in licensed premises and plays, indoor sporting events and performances of dance up to 11:00pm. The Government is proposing further deregulation of regulated entertainment under the Licensing Act 2003.

The cultural value of live music from the pub to the stadium: Getting beyond the numbers

By Dr Adam Behr, Dr Matt Brennan & Professor Martin Cloonan

This project is part of a long-standing programme of research that began with work on the role of live music and promoters, conducted between 2008 and 2011 by the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

This led to the formation of the Live Music Exchange (www.livemusicexchange.org), a web hub which produced a series of events geared towards promoting more substantive discussions and productive links between academia and the live music industry.
