Dr Kerry Howell is an Associate Professor at Plymouth University and head of the Deep Sea Conservation Research Unit. Kerry has worked in deep-sea ecology for 19 years and participated in 16 sea-going expeditions. Her research is focused on sustainable management of the deep-sea ecosystem. To date her work has supported the design of marine protected area networks both in the UK and on the High Seas; and has been used as evidence to support a ban on bottom trawling below 800m in European waters. Much of her teams work involves the creation of reliable seafloor maps, understanding what lives in the deep sea, and why species live where they do.
